As director of higher education innovation, Dr. Darnell Lewis oversees the development and execution of MCAN’s statewide initiatives, professional learning, and grantmaking designed to shift Michigan’s higher education system to improve postsecondary outcomes for residents.

Darnell brings extensive experience leading diversity, equity, inclusion, and academic success initiatives that support student retention and belonging. He has successfully directed a wide range of programs serving diverse student populations across higher education and K–12 settings. His previous roles include director of the Office of Belonging and Inclusion at California State University Long Beach and assistant director in the Office of Multicultural Student Services at Ferris State University. He has also served as a school social worker in Detroit charter and public schools, advancing equity and student support in urban communities.

Darnell earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and a Master of Social Work from the University of Michigan, as well as a Doctor of Education in community college leadership from Ferris State University. His mother is a social worker who earned a master’s degree, and she instilled in him the values of care, service, and education from a young age. She inspired him to attend college and pursue a career in social work. Through mentorship from professionals in the Office of Academic and Multicultural Initiatives and the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) at the University of Michigan, Darnell was further inspired to mentor youth in college access and readiness.

Outside of work, Darnell enjoys traveling, spending time with family and friends, attending concerts, and serving his community as a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
